If you wish to point a domain name that you have to a different domain or subdomain, one of the ways to do this would be to use a CNAME record. By setting up such a record, the domain address being forwarded loses all its records (A, MX, and so on) and instead, it takes the A record of the domain address it is pointed to. By doing this, if you are using a web design service by some company that gives you a subdomain, you can use an actual domain and not only will it be pointed to the site that you've set up, but it will also be displayed in the web browser address bar at all times. Some other possible uses of a CNAME record are to point all of the traffic from different subdomains to their main domain address, or to use the webmail service of your webhosting company by using webmail.your-doman.com, for instance. The latter will work only by setting up a CNAME record for a subdomain due to the fact that this type of a record created for the main domain renders it impossible to use e-mail addresses.

CNAME Records in Hosting

Creating a CNAME record through our Linux hosting is extremely simple. Our in-house built Hepsia Control Panel includes a section devoted to the DNS records of your domains, so you can set up a new CNAME record for any domain or subdomain hosted inside your account in a couple of easy steps. You can find a video tutorial in the same section in which you can see the process first-hand. This feature will give you a variety of possibilities - if you set up a company site on our end, for example, the staff can use their emails with the company domain, not with the address of our mail server. If you choose to set up an Internet site using a different provider that offers online web design services, you can easily forward a domain name hosted here and use it for the site. Last, but not least, in case you have a web-based store and you have a billing system for http://your-domain.com and/or an SSL certificate, you could create a CNAME record for the www subdomain and direct it to the main domain name, so all your visitors will be forwarded to a secure URL.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Hosting

Managing DNS records usually seems to be a hard task to people with less experience, but the Hepsia hosting CP, which comes with every single Linux semi-dedicated hosting which we provide, is very easy to use. If you wish to set up a CNAME record for any purpose, all you will have to do will be to select the domain name or subdomain that you need, pick the type of record, that will be CNAME in this case, then type in the value i.e. the domain address or subdomain you are forwarding to. The procedure is quite simple and you can set up the record in the DNS Records section of the Control Panel. Within the hour the new record will be 100 % active and within a couple of hours it will propagate all over the world. If you are not sure what you should do, we have prepared a detailed help article and a short video tutorial concerning how to go about creating a CNAME record and they're both located within that very same section of Hepsia. Needless to say, you can also get in touch with us for assistance whenever you want.
