Established in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain name extension is the single TLD planned for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to acquire john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level names remained running.
